I have arrived at an interpretation of the Fenlands through working with materials and actually living here and experiencing the landscape directly. I'm not saying that thought and reflection play no part in the process, but I am saying that is is impossible to separate the two activities. Thinking and doing are inextricably linked in the act of painting and the final outcome is a product of a dialogue between ideas and action.
When we have the entire history of artistic endeavour to call upon, both past and present, ideas are never in short supply. I think in relation to the marks I make and the marks I make are modified as I consider their relevance and value. Sometimes reflection and deliberation leads the way and sometimes accident and chance. The 'trick', if there is a trick, is finding the balance and tension between these elements.
